Hey everyone. I’ve just decided to go down the rabbit hole of reading and trying to learn about investing. After just scratching the surface I’ve come to the conclusion that for a basic beginner myself investing my money into some ETFs is the way to go. I’m 23 years old so quite young with some time up my sleeve. What are some safe ETFs I should look at investing in. I’m super keen and want to get started as I’ve read the longer I wait around and hesitate the more I’ll regret it once I get the ball rolling. What seems to be popular amongst pearler and a lot of social media platforms is: IVV, NDQ, VGS, IOZ. Any advise would be greatly appreciated so I can be steered in the right path. Willing to any reading to further my knowledge.

If you have purchased a residential property in an SMSF and you finally switch to pension phase, how do you value the fund balance for the purpose of minimum 4% drawdown. Do you use (a) purchase price, (b) 15x net rent (like a commercial property), (c) take valuation from the bank assessment with a desktop valuation (d) onthehouse/view/realestate/domain .com.au, (e) land value (from a rates notice) (f) purchase price inflated by CPI (which was how CGT was done up to the 90s) (g) something else? Significance is that rental yields of "investment grade" properties are probably more like 2-3%, but the potential sale price may be appreciating. Super pension phase requires a minimum 4% (increasing with age), so even if you owned enough property for the net rent to cover your desired retirement pension, it would be non-compliant if you used the optimistic valuations provided by, say, onthehouse.

Hi all. I plan to invest monthly, long term - for the next 30 or 40 years. However we are planning to buy property in 3 years when we get citizenship. I have a deposit of $150 000 sitting in a bank account attracting 5% interest monthly. I will need that money when we do buy property so I guess my question is - do I let it sit there for 3 years or invest some of it and cash out (with fingers crossed) when we need it for a house deposit? In the meantime I will start investing smaller amounts every month. Beginner investor here just trying to maximise my time (I'm 41) Thank you x

Hi, My partner and I are about to debt recycle from our mortgage. We have a mortgage of 870k with 200k in offset. We would like to keep 50k cash and split our loan to have a 150k tax deductible portion invested in ETFs. We would like to invest $2000 per month after this. My question is would it be more beneficial to auto invest this or deposit into the non tax deductible loan to later split again and invest after the redraw reaches a substantial amount? Thanks!

Hi all, I know these questions have been asked before, so apologies in advance for any repetition! - Joint brokerage accounts: For long-term investing (10+ years), should my wife and I each open separate brokerage accounts and split our investments 50/50? Would this reduce tax obligations in the future? Are there any downsides to doing this? - DHHF vs. VDHG: These two ETFs seem to come up a lot as beginner-friendly options. I’ve read that VDHG isn’t as tax efficient—does that make DHHF the better choice? Or is it more like choosing between Michael Jordan and LeBron James: both are great, so just pick one? - Dividend reinvestment: I understand DRPs are set up through Computershare or Link Market Services. Once I buy an ETF through Pearler, is it as simple as enabling auto reinvestment? Also, if the dividend is smaller than the cost of an ETF unit, do they issue fractional units, or how does that work? Someone told me that it might be possible to set up an SMSF that owns your PPOR, effectively renting your home from your SMSF. Also that then expenses like strata fees could somehow be deductible for the SMSF? Is this true? Or did I completely misinterpret what they said? If it’s true, where should I look to learn more about this?

Hello everyone, My wife and I are looking to potentially have discussions with a financial advisor early next year, but we're unsure how to find a good one. We started investing in ETFs just under two years ago and have built a solid portfolio in that time. We also have a good superannuation fund and good stable income. Our primary goal is to buy a property, potentially by the end of 2025 or soon after, so we are seeking advice on this, as well as on our overall financial situation. Does anyone have recommendations for reputable financial advisors? How to find a good one? What should we look for? I’ve been investing in A200 and IVV for a while, but changes in my weekly expenses and IVV’s higher unit price mean I’d need a decent chunk to keep adding. I’m considering: - Switching from IVV to VGS for a more affordable unit price. - Stopping contributions to A200 and moving to DHHF instead, as the unit price fits better with my current budget. What do you think? I’m not too concerned about diversifying into extra companies—I’m happy with large caps and the additional volatility. I also don’t plan to sell for at least 20 years. Cheers

Hi everyone, this is my first question. Thanks for creating such an awesome community! Quick background - Couple in early 40s, PPOR paid off. - Super on track to cover expenses from age 60. - Recently stopped salary sacrificing into super to focus on building investments outside of super. - Currently have $300k invested in VGS, aiming to grow this to $900k over the next six years, then FIRE and spend it down until preservation age. Questions - Our risk mitigation for market downturns (besides a 2-year emergency fund) is to continue or return to work if needed. This is why we're all in VGS. Is this a wise strategy, or should we consider adding bonds? - If we add bonds, should we build up the allocation gradually or rebalance closer to FIRE? - Is there merit in adding VAS? My partner believes it’s good for diversification, but I argue we’re already exposed to Australia through our PPOR, jobs, and super allocation. - Once we stop working entirely, what’s a good portfolio allocation? Would 60% bonds and 40% stocks be appropriate? Thanks in advance for your advice!

Hi there, here is something I've been struggling with for a few weeks. Background: * I'm looking to retire in 10-15 years (depending on market, salary growth, life events etc...) * Looking to minimise tax through salary sacrificing super (can add 10-14k per year depending on bonuses under the concession threshold) * Don't want to sacrifice time to retirement by putting too much into super and not having enough to live for potentially 15 years before I can access super. Keen to hear how other people in similar circumstances manage this when the investment timeline is 10+ years.

@Grace Johnson recently asked about VAS or A200, I want to add in IOZ & VHY to the comparison chat! What do ppl think about IOZ (top200) in comparison to A200 & VAS? Considered to be as good/same? Its not spoken about so much. I have A200 but I am thinking to swap to IOZ because DRP takes so long to buy another unit in A200, you can get @ 3 units of IOZ for 1 unit of A200. Any thoughts on that? Im considering either swapping to IOZ … OR starting VHY & DCA to that monthly (being 50yrs old) for dividend that will come in time. Interested in your opinions wise tribe!
