Operations Manager

Purpose of the role

  • Pearler has closed its Series A, is trying to grow a super product, has its other products constantly growing and plans to apply for its own Australian financial services licence (AFSL) in the next six to twelve months.
  • We currently operate as a corporate authorised representative of Sanlam Private Wealth, and we are working with Sanlam to put the systems and processes in place to hold and run a licence ourselves.
  • The role runs our day to day trading, payment and superannuation operations. It is the point person for both inside Pearler, and our partners.
  • In addition to day-to-day operations the role will assist with projects that have an operations and compliance component.
  • As part of this role, the person will help develop new operational procedures and policies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Superannuation administration
    • Point of contact for superannuation partner. Coordinating with them and other internal teams to resolve administration issues.
    • Perform manual account administration tasks, including portfolio management.
    • Assist with strategy for future superannuation based products and services.
    • Help develop operational procedures for superannuation administration
  • Trading Operations
    • Point of contact for our trading and brokerage partners. Managing incoming trade surveillance queries as well complex back-office tasks.
    • Manage cash settlement, acting as an authorised approver for transfers of client monies necessary for daily operations
    • Internal point of contact for day-to-day client query escalations. E.g. queries about expected behaviour of different orders, corporate actions, etc.
    • Various administrative tasks for managing product features that relate to trading capabilities
  • Payment operations
    • Manage payment receivables from clients, including payment disputes
    • Reconciliation and reporting
  • Products and features
    • Manage the operational components of all products and features. Handling ad-hoc situations that either can’t be automated or where automation is undesirable.
    • Stay abreast of product developments to assist in identifying operational effects and interactions
  • Partners and regulators
    • Help meet our compliance reporting obligations to external partners, most of which run quarterly.
    • Assist in reporting operational matters to Sanlam, partners, and regulators.
    • Help maintain the registers that sit behind reporting.
    • Provide assistance in responding to ASIC, AFCA and other regulators as required, and the handling of complaints through internal dispute resolution.
  • Complaince Responsibilities
    • Assist in reviewing and maintaining our know your client, anti money laundering and client monies handling policies to a market leading standard.
    • Make sure the procedures and controls behind those policies work in practice.
    • Help maintain our ISO 27001 certification, which means keeping policies and procedures updated through the year, making sure training is completed, and coordinating how to respond to results of audits.
    • Monitor operational compliance across the organization to identity gaps in procedures and ways to leverage automation
    • Assist the commercial director and the Head of Compliance in developing and submitting Pearler’s AFSL application as required.
    • Assist in building out the systems, policies, controls and evidence that a licensee needs. We are already ISO 27001 certified, so much of this framework exists today.

Target Qualifications

  • Essential
    • You have 2+ years experience in an operations or similar role, ideally at a finance company, but we are open to experience in other regulated industries
    • You have basic working knowledge of Australian and US share markets, enough to understand the market mechanics
    • You take a practical approach. You work with the business to find appropriate ways forward and can identify where automated approaches may be more appropriate.
    • You are comfortable using AI tools (Claude, ChatGPT, etc.) and are able to exercise them appropriately, especially in the context of sensitive customer data.
    • You have basic data analysis skills and are comfortable working with spreadsheets.
    • You have strong professional communication skills, both written and verbal, and understand broader business relationships
    • You are comfortable being the only operations person, because the role is hands-on and you will run the function without a team behind you.
    • You can explain operational procedures simply to people who do not work on them.
    • Sufficient technical knowledge to isolate technical problems from operational ones and escalate appropriately.
    • You have working knowledge of superannuation laws, policies and procedures.
    • You have ISO 27001 experience.
    • You have worked at a startup or a scale up, and with brokerage, managed funds or investment platforms.
    • You have an interest in personal finance, and you invest in shares or ETFs yourself.
  • How we use AI
    • We use AI heavily across the company, and we expect this role to do the same.
    • Experience using AI to get through work faster counts strongly in your favour.
    • However, you own the output. AI can draft, summarise and check, but you remain accountable for what goes out, and you should be able to show your reasoning.

Salary band: The band is $90,000 to $110,000 a year, plus superannuation. 

Hours: Full time

Senior Software Engineer

Key Responsibilities

  • Software Development: Lead the design, development, testing, and deployment of features across our stack.
  • Architecture & Design: Lead technical design, making critical decisions about system architecture and data flow.
  • Balancing Speed and Quality: Able to correctly identify how to approach technical and product problems in ways that balance a high quality robust outcome whilst also moving at a fast pace.
  • Product Ownership: Taking proactive responsibility to assist the customer service and design teams in solving problems or making improvements to our app.

Target Qualifications

  • 4+ years of professional experience in software engineering, with at least 1 year in a senior, lead, or architect-level capacity.
  • Worked for more than 6 months in a company of with less than 50 staff members.
  • Expertise in fundamental computer science principles, data structures, and algorithms.
  • Proven experience in designing and building fault-tolerant systems, leveraging cloud technologies (e.g., AWS).
  • Solid understanding of modern SQL database systems and API design principles (REST, GraphQL).
  • Solid understanding of ReactJS (Next.js) and React Native.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to articulate technical concepts.

Compensation Range

  • $150,000 p.a. to $200,000 p.a.

Mid-level Software Engineer

  • Demonstrated a sound understanding of fundamental computer science principles, data structures, and algorithms.
  • Solid understanding of modern SQL database systems and API design principles (REST, GraphQL).
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to articulate technical concepts.

Compensation Range

  • $110,000 p.a. to $150,000 p.a.

Growth Marketer

We’re searching for a Growth Marketer to join Pearler’s Growth and Marketing team. Working alongside our internal marketing, product, engineering teams and external agencies/resources/. you’ll find ways to scale our growth and bring our campaigns to life. Reporting to the CMO you’ll manage a range of growth initiatives designed to drive user acquisition, engagement, and retention. You’ll have the autonomy to innovate and the support to execute, making a direct impact on our growth trajectory. Your role will involve close collaboration with founders, engineers and content creators to ensure that growth strategies align with overall business objectives.

Your responsibilities include

  • Strategise and execute data-driven user acquisition strategies across a variety of channels
  • From ideation to execution, work with the team and manage the roll out of marketing and growth campaigns
  • Identify and test new growth ideas across all stages of the user journey
  • Leverage your analytics skills to deliver performance insight
  • Manage and optimise paid media campaigns for Facebook, Google Search, YouTube etc.
  • Work with our brand partners to maximise our partnership across their and our owned channels
  • Improve onboarding, activation, and retention of our users through engagement channels, including email, in-app/push, and content marketing.
  • Conduct A/B tests and experiment with different user acquisition strategies to optimize performance and drive continuous improvement;

Your skills should include

  • 3+ years of work experience in a high performance environment with existing growth/marketing experience. Experience working in high growth tech/startups is a plus.
  • Strong communicator who has experience working with product and engineering teams
  • Highly creative, identifying and acting on new growth and optimisation opportunities
  • Driven, self-starter who has a keen appetite for professional growth
  • Experience working with CRMs and managing email campaigns
  • Experience in A/B testing, funnel and landing page optimisation, and data analysis
  • Strong analytical skills and data-driven thinking
  • Additional skills and experience around design, content, marketing channels (e.g. PPC, SEO), analytics or coding are a plus
  • General everyday awareness of social media trends and channels is a must
  • While the role is a remote position, the ideal candidate is based in Sydney to benefit from in person time with the team on an ad hoc basis
