Headstart FAQs

Are Headstart accounts CHESS-sponsored?

A Headstart kid's account is essentially a Micro account, which means it is not CHESS-sponsored.

Can I use my Pearler login on Headstart?

Yes, if you already have a Pearler login, you can use this to log in on Headstart and create accounts. This can then also be accessed from the main Pearler platform.

Can I use Pearler Shares on the Headstart app?

No, Pearler Shares accounts cannot be used through the Headstart app.

Can I Autoinvest on Headstart?

Autoinvesting into your Headstart account is very easy to set up!

If you click the "Invest Now" button, you will be provided with a unique BSB/ACN, which you can use to set up a recurring deposit/investment (include the reference "automicro") at your own bank.

What happens when my child turns 18?

This depends on which option you choose when creating your Headstart account and your intentions when your child turns 18.

  • Invest with your child in mind – In this case, you will be the ultimate beneficiary. Any investments you make will remain in your name. You can continue to manage any investments with Pearler even after your child turns 18. You can also redeem any investments prior to your child turning 18.

  • Invest on behalf of your child – In this case, your child will be the ultimate beneficiary. At any point after your child turns 18, you are able to transfer the account into their name for them to manage. Alternatively, you can continue to invest and manage the account for as long as you choose after your child turns 18. You can also redeem any investments prior to your child turning 18.

In either option, there is no need to redeem when the child turns 18.

The rules applying to children under age 18 are not straightforward, we recommend you get professional taxation and/or financial advice before opening a Headstart account. Pearler is not a registered tax agent and cannot provide any advice on tax.

General information from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) on children’s investments can be accessed at: Children's share investments | Australian Taxation Office (ato.gov.au)
