Aus v US shares - smart to invest in both?

Investing Strategy

I currently hold shares in various Australian ETFs including VDHG, NDQ, ETHI, etc. My question is whether I should also be investing in US ETFs such as VOO. If these ETFs are made up of mostly the same/similar companies, are there any other benefits in choosing to go with US and AUS ETFs? Thanks!

Hi Stephanie.

Good question, and I have good news. You already are investing in US ETFs. Because even though the ones you mentioned are ‘listed’ on the Aussie market, the funds themselves (NDQ and VDHG) are heavily invested in US companies.

There is zero advantage adding more US focused ETFs, regardless of which exchange they are listed on.

When people talk about investing in both Aussie and US ETFs, they are really talking about investing in US and Australian companies. That’s what gives us the benefits of diversification. And you’re already doing that – VDHG is comprised of Aussie and global companies, NDQ is US companies, and ETHI is global companies. So you’ve got it more than covered.

Hope that helps :)
Dave
