We offer minor accounts where the adult/guardian would be the primary entity and assets are held in the name of the guardian/adult in trust for the child. Once the minor has turned 18, we are able to process a transfer from a minor account into a newly created individual account in their name. There is no requirement to transfer as timing would depend on when the adult feels ready. We do not charge fees for this type of transfer, although we would advise you to obtain professional tax advice before proceeding as CGT may still apply depending on your personal circumstances.
Direct ASX investments made on Pearler are CHESS-sponsored, which means you are investing directly into the company and your investments will be held in your name and associated with your account's unique HIN (or Holder Identification Number - X followed by a 10-digit number). This then means that you will have direct ownership of each share/ETF and also a direct relationship with their respective share registries. An adult TFN can be supplied for this product to be used for any available ATO prefilling.
Pearler Micro is our managed fund product that tracks popular ETFs and allows you to make unlimited contributions (as little as $5 at a time) for a low monthly fee. Can I open an account for my child?

If you already have an investment account and want to open a new Joint investment account, simply head to your Settings page Click on the account drop down menu > Create a new account as long as the new account is also associated with you.

If you've already opened an individual account, your details should be saved and pre-filled. You would then only need to add your co-holder's details.

The account co-holder will automatically receive an email to access the account as soon as it becomes active. They will be able to log in or create a new Pearler profile using the email address provided for them on the application to automatically gain ful access to the Joint account. No need to submit another application from the co-holder's login.

Can I open a Trust / SMSF / Company account on Pearler?
What is the Trust / SMSF designation? Account designations are relevant to Trust, SMSF and Company accounts and acts as a label or identifier that indicates the purpose of the trust and/or who the trust is for. The holdings for these types of accounts are registered under the name of the trustee(s) and the trust entity in the account designation. Your trust designation is shown in the <> field of your registered CHESS name.
For example, if your Trust name is "Jones Family Trust", the trust designation would be "Jones Family". It would be something similar to your Trust / SMSF name minus the word "trust" or "fund".
Please note that there is a character limit imposed on the account designation field and the word trust and fund is not allowed by CHESS rules.
Can I invest in US shares and ETFs with my trust/SMSF account? US investing is not available for our Trust / SMSF / Company accounts.

How much does investing on Pearler cost?

Yes, two-factor authentication (2FA) is required when performing important actions such as monetary movements and account changes on your account to provide an additional layer of protection.

Does Pearler use two-factor authentication?

Pearler promotes regular, long-term, passive investing, or more specifically - incremental amounts in diversified portfolios, for the long-term.
In fact, this is the key belief we founded Pearler on! Back in 2018 we got fed up with only having two bad options to refer our friends to when they wanted to start investing – confusing trading platforms or expensive micro-investment apps.
So we built Pearler from the ground up to focus on the thing that matters most – helping people achieve their long-term financial goals - and the best way to do that is by investing in incemental amounts, in diversified portfolios, for the long-term.
Let's break down what that means.
Incremental Amounts Incremental amounts means investments are made in regular chunks - like fortnightly, monthly or quarterly. This can, and should, be whatever amount and frequency suits you best.
Most people within our community choose to invest a percentage of their take home pay every time they get paid. This way they are dollar-cost averaging, which is a long-term investing technique that results in a lower average cost of investments (meaning they get above-market returns without trying to time the market), and less stress!
Diversified Portfolios Diversified portfolios means that invested funds are spread across many companies.
Diversification is important, because having all your eggs in one basket can leave you vulnerable to sharper market fluctuations, whereas diverse portfolios spread risk and invest in different types of businesses at the same time.
Diversification can be achieved by investing in many (+20) individual shares, or by investing in a single exchange-traded fund (ETF) or listed investment company (LIC) because they are baskets of shares (meaning you invest in many, usually hundreds, by investing in any ETF or LIC).
Long-term Long-term means at least 5 years, and the longer the better.
The reason this is important is because the longer the time period, the more certain you can be that your investment will steadily appreciate.
The chart below shows the US Stock Market return data for the last 146 years. The US stock market represents ~50% of the world's market capitalisation (i.e. all shares that can be invested in by the public globally), so it can be considered a relatively diversified investment - significantly more so than just investing in Australia.
As you can see, the market is volatile over one-year intervals. If you were to choose a one-year period at random, there would be a 31% chance of losing money!
However, as the timeframes get longer – 5-year, 10-year, and then 20-year rolling periods – the frequency of losses rapidly decreases. By the time you get to the 20-year windows, there isn’t a single instance in which the market had a negative return.
Combine a long-term investment horizon with dollar-cost averaging - i.e. consistently investing no matter what the market is doing - and a sufficiently diversified portfolio, and you are guaranteed to succeed.

What can I invest in on the Pearler platform?

You currently cannot open a new account with Pearler if you are not a resident or tax resident of Australia.
In order to set up an investment account successfully, you will need to provide an Australian mobile number, bank account and government-issued document in the form of a driver's license or passport. This is to prove that you have a sufficient footprint in Australia.
If you already have an account, investing on the platform will depend on your individual situation as there are some tax implications that need to be considered if you become a non-resident of Australia for tax purposes. Technically, we don't prevent you from investing from overseas.
It is best to talk to a tax accountant to better understand your situation and any financial implications that come with living overseas.
If you do move overseas, we can pass on your new residential address, phone number and postal address to our broker, who can pass these details on to CHESS and your relevant share registries. If you are changing your country of citizenship and/or tax residency, those details including the TIN if you wish to disclose one can also be passed on.

Can I invest with Pearler if I'm not an Australian resident?

Any individual over the age of 18 with a valid Australian form of ID (driver's license or passport) is eligible to sign up for an investment account with Pearler.
You currently cannot open a new account with Pearler if you are a resident or tax resident of another country.
This is because to open an investment account, you will usually require an Australian bank account and government-issued document in the form of a driver's license or passport to prove that you have a sufficient footprint in Australia.
