STEP 3

Will you ever want to use the Kid's TFN?

Consider whether you want to keep things simple in your name, or maintain the option of handing over a portfolio one day.

NOTE:

Even if you’re not investing huge amounts, you are strongly advised to seek your own professional tax advice about the applicable tax consequences that may apply prior to selecting either option.

🤝

My TFN, my tax obligation

Your portfolio, your tax obligation, but the minor is the beneficiary. This option can be used for a Shares or Headstart account.

👧

Option to use Kid's TFN

Now or sometime before 18 they’ll earn money to invest, use their own TFN and have a separate tax return.
Note: only available with Headstart.

Note: If you want to use your kids TFN, this is only offered via Headstart

STEP 4

Do you plan to invest more than $500 at a time?

How much you intend to invest at a time can determine which type of minor account suits you better.

💰

Less than $500

You’re likely to invest smaller amounts, maybe from chores, an allowance, or even just on special occasions. Headstart enables you to invest micro amounts as you go.

💵

$500 or more

You’re going to invest over $500 each time. This opens the possibility of investing directly into ASX listed shares or ETFs. See below for how to think about different fees.
