PEARLER FEATURES
Tags & Section Targets
I'm quite new to pearler and my investment journey and have been familiarizing myself with the dashboard and it's available features in order to understand and utilize them maximally. I own a couple different ETF's and have since come across the Tag feature and its display column. What is the clear stated purpose of this feature exactly and how might I make the most out of its use? Same goes for the section targets. Is this simply to divide up individual stock or ETF's under categorical tags and then create a clear stated manual target balance ratio between each of them? If so, how is this different from setting up automate?

Hey Adam!
Welcome to Pearler and congrats on starting your investment journey. Sounds like you’re diving in thoughtfully, which is great to see.

TAGS
The Tag feature is all about helping you better understand and analyse your portfolio by adding an extra layer of organisation beyond Sections. While Sections are used to track portfolio targets, Tags are more flexible and helpful for slicing and dicing your holdings in different ways.
Some examples of how Tags can be useful:
Let’s say you have both an AU and US section, but you want to see your total Equities exposure across both. Tagging those investments as “Equities” allows you to view that across sections.
Or maybe you hold a mix of ASX ETFs and ASX Shares within one section (say, “ASX”), but want to analyse them separately without creating separate sections — Tags help you do that without messing with your allocation tracking.
So in short, Tags are for analysis and visualisation, not for setting targets or driving automation.
SECTION TARGETS
These are used to group your investments and set manual allocation goals for each category. For example, you might want:
50% in “ASX”
30% in “US”
20% in “Thematic”
These targets are for tracking how your portfolio compares to your intended strategy. They’re manual and purely for visualisation, so Pearler won’t automatically act on them as it just helps you monitor and make informed decisions.
AUTOMATE VS MANUAL TARGETS
This is a key difference:
Manual Targets (via dashboard): Just for visual tracking — Pearler doesn’t do anything with this data beyond showing you how you’re tracking.
Automate: This is where Pearler actually invests your money based on rules you set. You can:
Rotate investments across your chosen ETFs
Automatically rebalance to bring you back in line with your target allocations
Allocate fixed amounts per asset
So essentially, you can think of Tags and
