How to invest in the ASX 200

How do I invest in the ASX 200 as a complete beginner? It seems like a smart and relatively low-risk option to me, but I’m unsure which ETF to choose. Would it be a bad idea to invest only in this? Why might someone choose a different investment strategy? Thanks!

Hi Amir.

There is honestly not much difference between the ASX 200 ETFs, they are essentially the same just with a slightly different fee and ETF manager.

The most popular options on the pearler platform are A200, and VAS (which tracks the top 300 rather than 200, but again makes little difference).

People tend to invest also in international markets such as the US, for the purpose of diversification. The Shares page will show you the favourite ETFs in the community for that too, which can help with your research: https://pearler.com/explore/invest/shares

Cheers, Dave

Investing in the ASX 200 as a beginner can be a smart way to gain exposure to the top 200 companies listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX), which can indeed be a relatively low-risk option compared to investing in individual stocks. Here’s how you can start:

  1. Understanding ETFs: Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) that track the ASX 200 provide a simple and effective way to invest in this index. An ETF is a type of fund that owns the underlying assets (shares of stock, bonds, oil futures, gold bars, etc.) and divides ownership of those assets into shares. ETFs are bought and sold on an exchange like a stock, which means they are easy to trade.

  2. Choosing an ETF: There are several ETFs that track the ASX 200, each with its own management style and cost structure. Popular options include the iShares Core S&P/ASX 200 ETF (IOZ), Vanguard Australian Shares Index ETF (VAS), and SPDR S&P/ASX 200 Fund (STW). Look at factors like management fees, performance history, and liquidity when choosing an ETF.

  3. Consider Diversification: While investing solely in the ASX 200 through an ETF can be a solid strategy, it’s important to consider diversification. The ASX 200 is heavily weighted towards financials and materials, which means it may not provide exposure to other important sectors or international markets. Diversifying your investments can help manage risk and achieve a more stable return over time.

  4. Why Choose a Different Investment Strategy?: Different investment strategies cater to different risk tolerances, investment timelines, and financial goals. For instance, someone might choose to invest in individual stocks to target higher returns, or in international ETFs to gain exposure to global markets. Others might prefer bonds or real estate for their perceived stability and income generation.

  5. Start Small and Learn: As a beginner, it’s wise to
