Do I need to fill out W8-BEN form for ETFs?

I am confused about whether I need to fill out the W8-BEN form for ETFs such as VTS (US domiciled), I also own VGS, NDQ, IOO. I thought that if I bought ETFs on ASX, even though they track US market, I don't need to. Computershare enquiry says yes I do, Commsec says no. I am using more than 1 broker, so do I need a form for each broker?

Hi Tamila,

Thanks for highlighting this topic that is confusing for many people.

Generally, you need to submit a W8-BEN in 2 different situations, which can allow Australian investors to reclaim back some of the 30% withholding US tax on any distributions.

1. Trading US-domiciled AU stocks (i.e. ASX:VTS)

You will need to file and submit the W8-ben via the responsible share registry. Check out this helpful blog to help with the process :)

2. Trading US stocks (AAPL, GOOGL etc)

Our US brokerage partner automatically fills and files it for you when you register for a US Trading account. No further action is required from you (until the 3-year renewal period comes around).
